Title

DvT-informed Playback Theatre – representation & transformation

Description

Many expressive arts therapists will know – or be practitioners of – Playback Theatre (PT) – a spontaneous but ritualised non-scripted drama form in which group or audience members are invited to become tellers, sharing a story from their life and witnessing it played back by members of their community in role as actors. The pressure or desire to make performances accurate and authentic will be familiar to anyone who has attempted to represent someone else’s personal testimony. Familiar too will be the risk for any client who has told their story too many times of ‘getting stuck’ with their story/history and the need for transformation, the theme of this conference.

The theory and practice of Developmental Transformations (DvT) calls attention to ways in which PT may be unnecessarily constrained. This workshop provides a taster of the ways in which DvT may influence the practice of PT including ‘Bebop Playback,’ in which the Teller’s story is first played ‘straight’ then replayed, starting with the original but diverging into spontaneous improvisation along the lines of DvT before returning. What are the risks and benefits of performing the ‘same’ and the ‘different’ for tellers, actors and audiences? The content of the workshop is informed by two DvT and Performance Laboratories (#DvTLab) held at University of Lincoln, UK in 2015-2016 bringing together members of a therapeutic theatre group from an NHS Community Mental Health Service context with students on the University of Lincoln MA/MFA Choreographing Live Art programme and experienced PT practitioners.
